Tips and advice for mobility equipment and disability aids in Guildford, Surrey.
Guildford, sometimes referred to as the county town of Surrey, lieson the main A3 trunk road between London and Portsmouth. In 2018, the wider Borough had a population of just under 150,000. It is one of the most expensive places to live in the UK, outside of London.
Famed for being one of the best shopping destinations in the UK, the historic main High Street is still paved with granite cobbles.
Guildford has an Anglican cathedral and castle, as well as being the location for the University of Surrey. The town also has an Olympic-sized lido, dating back to the 1930s, open for public swimming between May and September.
Well-served by public transport, the town has two railway stations and excellent bus services.
Wheelchair Accessibility in Guildford
Wheelchair-friendly Visitor Trail in Winchester
Guildford is a welcoming place for all visitors and is largely wheelchair accessible, despite being such an old town and built on a hill. The bottom of the hill is where the train station, river and The Friary shopping mall and bus station are located.
The buses are accessible and all bus travel is free for wheelchair users. From the Friary Bus Station, you’ll be able to explore central Guildford relatively easily.
From Guildford train station, it is important to note that the wheelchair accessible side leads into the main town area. The High Street with its charming shops and cafes is highly recommended and has wheelchair-friendly pavements. On North Street, some manual wheelchairs may need help pushing.
Guildford Castle, whilst not completely accessible, does have an accessible ramp that leads about halfway up to the castle entrance, from where you can enjoy views over Guildford. As an alternative, spend time by the River Wey, which flows through Guildford between the Friary and the train station.

The Blue Badge in Guildford scheme offers parking concessions for those who are eligible. There are numerous disabled bays in the town’s car parks and free parking in any Guildford Borough Council pay and display car park.
