Mobility Aids – The Importance of Regular Servicing

Over the course of the last 18 months or so, it hasn’t been very easy to venture out, to do all the normal things we like to do, such as shopping or visiting friends.

As a result, your trusted scooter or wheelchair may well have been in use a lot less than normal.

But as life now returns to a semblance of normality, it’s time to give those mobility aids a bit of a dust off and get them on the move once again.

Before you start venturing out, however, if your equipment has missed its usual service during the last 12 months, now’s the time to be booking it in. It is really important to ensure that all the working and moving parts are functioning properly and that it is perfectly safe.

Using a mobility aid that hasn’t undergone regular servicing is never advisable. The last thing you want is a malfunction, something breaking down or the scooter not starting and leaving you stranded some distance from home. Similarly, if the equipment develops an unexpected fault, you might be endangering yourself or other members of the public.

That’s why annual servicing is so important. It doesn’t matter where you live, whether you are in close proximity to us in Alton, or further afield in Hampshire or Surrey. Out and About is always here to look after you and handle all your servicing requirements.

Which Type of Mobility Equipment Needs servicing?

Basically, anything with moving parts – regardless of age. This includes scooters, powerchairs, manual wheelchairs, walkers/rollators and riser recliner chairs.

How often should this equipment be serviced?

Wheelchairs, scooters and rollators are just like cars. As recommended by the manufacturers, they should be serviced annually. Apart from ensuring the product’s safety and reliability – and your peace of mind – it is also worth remembering that mobility equipment showing a full-service history will retain its value. This could be advantageous to you, if you decide you want to sell the item at some stage in the future.

How long will the service take?

We would normally aim to service your equipment and return it to you on the same day. This will depend on what we find. If your mobility aid hasn’t been serviced for a while, had a considerable amount of wear and tear, or been standing idle for months on end, it may take a little longer to service. When you make the appointment, we should be able to give you a good idea of how long the service will take.

The thing that usually takes the time are the batteries. These are key components. Having a healthy battery or batteries on your scooter or wheelchair is vital. Testing and charging are normally the key elements of any service and, in some cases, this can take a number of hours to complete, which may mean we need to keep hold of your vehicle overnight.

If it appears that you may be without your equipment for more than a day – and it is essential that you have a chair or scooter during this time – we will always try to find you a short-term replacement, whilst the repairs are being made.

What is the cost of an annual service?

We like to think our pricing is extremely competitive. All our servicing is carried out at our Alton workshop by knowledgeable mechanics, with vast experience of mobility equipment. Pricing as follows:

  • Powerchairs and Scooters – £85.00 ex VAT
  • Manual Wheelchairs, Rollators and Walkers – £30 ex VAT
  • Riser Recliners – from £30.00 ex VAT
Additionally, there will normally be a small collection charge.

Do I Need to be an Existing Customer for you to do a Service?

No, not necessarily. If you have bought your equipment from us, then we would always advocate that you return it to us for service – unless you have moved right away from the area.

At the same time, we are always happy to entertain the servicing of equipment that has not been previously sold by us.  Once we know the make, model and age, we will be able to advise you whether this is possible. In some cases, for instance, the equipment may have become obsolete and it may not be possible for us to get hold of replacement parts – but we will always do our best to assist.
